Bookshelf Update: January 2016

I’m really excited to start a new monthly series this year called “Bookshelf Update!” This is what book Bloggers/YouTubers are calling “Wrap Ups” and most commonly post on a monthly basis. Welcome to the FIRST EDITION of “Bookshelf Update!” The month of January is always my slowest reading month, so this won’t be too terribly exciting, although I did purchase quite a few books this month 🙂 Amazon prime … my best friend & worst enemy 😉 This series will be sponsored by the BookDepository.com. There are some really good sales right now…

2016 Book Challenge: January – New Year, New Author!

Happy New Year friends! Wow, it’s already the 21st, this year is already flying by! Time goes faster when you have a lot of fun stuff going on, though. Stay tuned 🙂 This month’s challenge is about discovering new authors. I can be a bit behind in terms of the “book world,” so, for my first time, this month I stumbled across Sophie Kinsella… Sophie Kinsella is a well known YA author from London, who entered the scene in 2000. She is best known best for her most popular work, the Shopaholic Series,…

Book Review: Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard

This is a world divided by blood – red or silver. The Reds are commoners, ruled by a Silver elite in possession of god-like superpowers. And to Mare Barrow, a seventeen-year-old Red girl from the poverty-stricken Stilts, it seems like nothing will ever change. That is, until she finds herself working in the Silver Palace. Here, surrounded by the people she hates the most, Mare discovers that, despite her red blood, she possesses a deadly power of her own. One that threatens to destroy the balance of power. Fearful of…

2015 Book Challenge: July Minesweeper Challenge

Another classic game was featured in my book club’s July Challenge! Minesweeper! So the rules are basic, you read a book & you get to pick a box on the minesweeper board. Behind it, there will either be bonus points (ranging from +1 to +5) or a bomb, which is nothing! You get a point for each book read, a point for each book you read with a buddy, and any bonus points that you receive. The team to get the most points, wins! I read eight books in July, so I got eight points…

2015 Book Challenge: June Jumanji Game

In June, my book club is playing the JUMANJI Challenge!!! Basically you and your team have to make it across the Jumanji board game. Each square on the board represents a different category. If you read a book that fulfills that category, you get to advance to the next square! The goal is to get from Start to Finish on the game board as quickly as possible. Here are the books I have been assigned to read, and our Jumanji “board.” Click on the book title to view my Goodreads…

2015 Book Challenge: May: Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen

A super quick read which a lot of you may have heard of – Girl, Interrupted by Susanna Kaysen was one of my book club’s May 2015 book choices; I did not previously own this book, and I bought it off Amazon for about $11 including shipping. This popular story is probably best known for the movie adaption which features Anjelina Jolie, Winona Ryder, Brittany Murphy, Whoopi Goldberg, and more well known actors. Personally, I enjoyed this book. I am interested in this story of psych story and enjoyed similar books such as…

2015 Book Challenge: April: We Were Liars by E. Lockhart

We Were Liars by E. Lockhart was the best book I read in April (I read four books, you can find them all here) and is one of my favorites this year. There are so many quotes from this book that I’d like to paste memes here for, but alas, I will only paste a few for you. This book was so deep and powerful for me – ok, it IS officially my favorite read of 2015 so far. I think it was so powerful because I did not see the twist…

2015 Book Challenge: April: Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children by Ransom Riggs

Much to my surprise and pleasure, I’ve had extra time this month to read. I have set my 2015 goal on Goodreads to 30 books, and I have to read more than one book a month to accomplish that! If you’re not on Goodreads.com or don’t know what I mean, Goodreads.com is an online community of book lovers and they let you set a “goal” or “challenge” for yourself of how many books you want to or strive to read that year. Last year I conservatively set my goal at…
